Bejlek Stuns World No. 1 Sabalenka to Reach Cincinnati QF
Czech world No. 35 Sára Bejlek upset top seed Aryna Sabalenka 7-6(7), 6-4 in the Cincinnati Round of 16, advancing to her first ever WTA 1000 quarterfinal.

Three Seeds, Three Wins: Bejlek's Stunning Cincinnati Run
Sára Bejlek has delivered the upset of the week at the Cincinnati Open. The Czech world No. 35 eliminated top seed and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 7-6(7), 6-4 in the Round of 16 on Thursday, booking a place in the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career. It is one of the most significant results of the 2026 women's season on hardcourt.
The win completed a remarkable hat-trick of victories over seeded opponents this week. Bejlek had already accounted for former Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejčíčková and Ekaterina Alexandrova before turning her attention to the biggest scalp of all. Sabalenka arrived at P&G Stadium with a 40-7 win-loss record for the season and having won her previous two matches in Cincinnati without dropping a set. Pre-match models gave the Belarusian an 86% win probability.
Tiebreak Drama in the Opening Set
The first set was a war of attrition. Sabalenka pressed with her customary power from the baseline, but Bejlek refused to yield, mixing her responses well and staying composed under heavy pressure. Neither player could find a decisive break, and the set went to a tiebreak. At 7-7, with the match finely balanced, Bejlek held her nerve and converted to take the set 9-7 on tiebreak points — a moment that visibly shifted the complexion of the match.
In the second set Bejlek was the more assertive player from the outset. She broke Sabalenka's serve in the fifth game and never relinquished her advantage, closing out 6-4 to complete a straight-sets victory that silenced the crowd momentarily before erupting into applause. For the Czech player, who has spent much of her career building steadily on the Challenger circuit, it represents the biggest result of her professional life.
Sabalenka Stumbles Ahead of the US Open
For Sabalenka, the defeat is a concerning development as the season approaches its final Grand Slam. The world No. 1 had been in commanding form this summer but was unable to raise her level in the tiebreak when it mattered most. Her second-serve consistency also came under pressure during the pivotal moments of the second set.
Bejlek, 23 years old and a native of Prague, will now enter the world's top 25 when the ranking points from her Cincinnati run are applied. She had never previously reached this stage of a WTA 1000 tournament, and the week in Ohio represents a genuine step up into the sport's elite tier.
Keys Stands Between Bejlek and the Semifinal
The next obstacle in Bejlek's path is American Madison Keys, a former Cincinnati champion who came through 7-6, 6-4 against Wang Xinyu to reach the quarterfinals. Keys brings experience and hardcourt quality that will test the Czech's resolve all over again.
The WTA quarterfinal draw at the Cincinnati Open also features defending favourite Iga Swiatek, who maintained her flawless week with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Diane Parry, and Marta Kostyuk, who recovered from a lost opening set to beat Mirra Andreeva 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. Amanda Anisimova also advanced, dismissing Linda Noskova 6-1, 6-4. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Thursday afternoon local time. Bejlek's run has already exceeded most expectations — her Cincinnati semifinal berth remains very much in play.
