A Flawless Clinic on Home Soil

Leylah Fernandez turned in one of the most complete performances of her 2026 season on Friday at the National Bank Open in Toronto, dismantling world No. 5 and reigning French Open champion Mirra Andreeva 6-1, 6-4 in one hour and 21 minutes. The result handed the Canadian her first top-ten victory in more than a year and sent a capacity home crowd at Sobeys Stadium into raptures.

Fernandez was clinical from the first point, winning nine straight games to claim the opening set and immediately go up 4-0 in the second. She converted four of five break-point chances and won 24 of 27 points on her first serve — an 88.9 per cent success rate that gave Andreeva almost nothing to attack. The Russian managed to reel off three consecutive games to trim the deficit to 5-4 before the Canadian served out the match on her second match point without drama.

The weight of the result is amplified by the quality of the opponent. Andreeva entered the tournament ranked fifth in the world and carrying the prestige of her Roland Garros title, making her one of the tournament's central favourites. Fernandez had lost her last seven encounters against top-ten opponents and had not beaten a player ranked inside the top ten since 2023 — including a previous defeat to Andreeva herself. Friday's match looked nothing like that losing run. Fernandez dictated pace, absorbed pace and redirected pace with equal confidence, producing what observers described as possibly her finest outing since her stunning run to the 2021 US Open final.

"In possibly her biggest win since the 2021 US Open, Leylah Annie Fernandez put on a clinic in suffocating counter-punching," was the assessment from the official tournament recap. The numbers backed up the narrative: she saved the one break point she faced all evening while pressuring Andreeva's serve throughout.

Osaka Waits in the Fourth Round

Victory sets up a round-of-16 encounter with Naomi Osaka, who also advanced on Friday. The matchup carries its own narrative weight — Osaka, a former world No. 1 and three-time hard-court major champion, against Fernandez, a player who has spent much of this season searching for the form that made her one of the tour's most dangerous competitors on fast surfaces.

Friday was otherwise a productive day for the top of the Toronto draw. Coco Gauff was equally dominant against Maria Sakkari, winning 6-1, 6-4 to underline her status as a title contender, while Elena Rybakina overcame Ann Li 6-2, 7-5 in a match that was tighter than the scoreline suggests — Rybakina had to recover from 3-5 down in the second before reeling off the final four games.

Fernandez, however, was the story of the day. She produced her best tennis precisely when the occasion demanded it — on home turf, in a stadium packed with Canadian supporters, against an opponent who had every statistical reason to expect a comfortable passage into the last sixteen. The fourth round against Osaka takes place Saturday evening at Sobeys Stadium.
