Masters debutant Géa stuns Shelton for first top-10 win in Shanghai
World No. 56 Arthur Géa beat third seed Ben Shelton 7-6(5), 7-6(3) on his Masters 1000 main-draw debut and will face Jakub Menšík next.

Ben Shelton became the biggest casualty of the Shanghai Masters so far on Sunday. Arthur Géa, ranked No. 56 and playing in the main draw of a Masters 1000 for the first time, beat the No. 3 seed 7-6(5), 7-6(3) in the third round to claim his first win over a top-10 player.
The 21-year-old Frenchman needed two hours and seven minutes. According to the ATP, the win lifts him to No. 48 in the live rankings, a long way from the No. 241 he started the season at.
Two tie-breaks, one nerveless Frenchman
It was a close match throughout. Each player broke serve three times, and Shelton had more winners (29 to 25) and more aces (7 to 4). Géa was the steadier of the two. He won 75 per cent of points behind his first serve to Shelton's 63, made fewer unforced errors (21 to 27) and won 90 of the 169 points played, according to Tennis Majors.
He was also bold at the net, winning 20 of his 28 trips forward. In both tie-breaks he held his nerve while the American let it slip.
"It has been an incredible few weeks. I changed my game a lot. I am more confident on the court," Géa said afterwards.
Shelton: "I got outplayed"
Shelton, the world No. 4 and a US Open finalist this year, did not make excuses for the result, though he pointed to his preparation. Shanghai is his first tournament since Flushing Meadows apart from Davis Cup duty, and he skipped Tokyo the week before over fitness concerns.
"I got outplayed today. The guy played better than me," Shelton said, according to Tennis Now. He admitted he had arrived late, that his body "wasn't ready" and that he wished he had "come over here earlier." He also had praise for his opponent, calling Géa a "very talented player" with "a huge forehand and big game."
The defeat cost Shelton the chance to wrap up his place at the ATP Finals early, but he still sits fourth in the Race to Turin with three tournaments left this season.
From Los Cabos to the last 16
Géa's rise has picked up speed since the summer. He won his first ATP title in Los Cabos in July and then reached the fourth round of the US Open as a lucky loser, where he lost in five sets to Botic van de Zandschulp. According to Tennis Majors, he is now 12-2 at tour level since July.
In Shanghai, he had already beaten compatriot Ugo Humbert 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 and Jaime Faria before taking down Shelton.
Next up is a fourth-round meeting with Jakub Menšík. The Czech beat Francisco Cerúndolo 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 on Sunday, his first win over the Argentine in four meetings.

Zverev clinches year-end No. 1, a first for a German player
Alcaraz's Shanghai loss sealed it: Alexander Zverev, 29, will finish 2026 as world No. 1 and called it "a dream come true". Next up in Shanghai: Bublik.
Alexander Zverev will finish 2026 as the world No. 1. The German clinched the year-end top spot on Monday without hitting a ball, when Carlos Alcaraz lost 7-5, 7-6(4) to Zizou Bergs in the third round of the Rolex Shanghai Masters. That result left nobody able to catch him in the race.
