Hanfmann Stuns Roland Garros Finalist Cobolli in Montreal
Yannick Hanfmann defeated sixth seed Flavio Cobolli 7-6(5), 7-6(2) in Montreal R2. Luciano Darderi also reached the last 32 after Gabriel Diallo retired injured.

Hanfmann Dominates Tiebreaks to Down Roland Garros Finalist
Germany's Yannick Hanfmann produced one of the second-round upsets of the week at the National Bank Open in Montreal on Wednesday, defeating sixth seed Flavio Cobolli 7-6(5), 7-6(2) in two hours and eleven minutes to reach the third round of the ATP Masters 1000. Cobolli had been one of the stories of the European clay season after reaching the Roland Garros final in May — where he lost to Alexander Zverev in five sets — but has found hard courts a considerably more demanding proposition since returning to North America.
The contest at the Rogers Centre had all the hallmarks of a tiebreak thriller. Both players held serve throughout the opening set, with the breaker locked at 5-5 before Hanfmann edged ahead. Cobolli clawed back to 6-5, but the German converted on his second set point to take it 7-5. The second set played out in near-identical fashion. Cobolli briefly seized the initiative, breaking in the sixth game to level at 4-4 and seemingly finding his range from the baseline. Hanfmann broke back immediately, forced a second tiebreak, and was emphatic this time — winning 7-2 with an assurance that belied his underdog status.
Cobolli Struggles to Rediscover His Paris Form on Hard Courts
Multiple Italian outlets noted that Wednesday's performance bore little resemblance to the fluid tennis Cobolli displayed at Roland Garros. The Roman, now attempting to defend significant ranking points across the North American hard-court swing, has visibly struggled for the tactical control that defined his clay campaign. His route to the Roland Garros final included a quarterfinal win over Felix Auger-Aliassime before compatriot Matteo Arnaldi's illness-enforced withdrawal from the semifinal opened the door to the final. Against Hanfmann, however, there were few of the margins that clay affords a player of Cobolli's style.
For Hanfmann, ranked around 57th on the ATP Tour, the victory is his most significant on hard courts this season and his first third-round appearance at a Masters 1000 event in 2026. The 32-year-old from Heidelberg now awaits his round-of-32 opponent as the draw begins to firm up around the higher seeds entering at this stage.
Darderi Through as Diallo Retires With Knee Injury
Also advancing to the third round was Italian Luciano Darderi, though via a more emotional route. Canadian wildcard Gabriel Diallo, playing in front of his home crowd, was forced to retire with a knee injury at 6-4, 2-3 after just over an hour on court. Diallo left the arena visibly distressed, leaving the Montreal crowd subdued after their vocal support for the hometown player.
Darderi now faces a formidable challenge in the round of 32: a match against Juncheng Shang, the young Chinese player who delivered Tuesday's most dramatic performance by saving five consecutive match points against Andrey Rublev to advance in three sets. Top seed Alexander Zverev — Roland Garros champion and the man who defeated Cobolli in the Paris final — enters Montreal at the third-round stage. With Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz both absent from the draw this week, the path to the title remains unusually open heading into the weekend.
