Nakashima Saves Set Points to Outlast Fritz in Three-Set Thriller

Brandon Nakashima advanced to the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Open on Friday with a composed three-set victory over fourth seed Taylor Fritz, winning 7-6(9), 4-6, 6-3 after more than two hours of high-quality hardcourt tennis. The result sets up an all-American last-four clash with Frances Tiafoe, who overcame Lorenzo Musetti 7-6, 7-5 in the other quarter-final to complete a remarkable American sweep of the top half of the draw.

The opening set was the defining act of the Nakashima-Fritz encounter. In a first-set tiebreak that stretched all the way to 11-9, Nakashima saved multiple set points with clutch groundstrokes from the back of the court before finally converting to take the opener. Fritz, one of the biggest servers on the ATP Tour, reset and dominated the second set, winning it 6-4 with his serve largely untroubled. But in the third, Nakashima's baseline consistency proved the difference: he earned an early break and served out the final set 6-3 without facing a single break point.

Tiafoe Edges Musetti in a Tight Two-Setter

The other quarter-final on Friday saw Frances Tiafoe defeat Lorenzo Musetti 7-6, 7-5 in a match that was considerably closer than the scoreline suggests. Musetti, who had reached the quarter-finals in Cincinnati for the second consecutive year, pushed Tiafoe hard in both sets. The Italian held a 5-3 lead in the second before Tiafoe reeled off four consecutive games to close out the match. The win was Tiafoe's second consecutive victory over a top-20 opponent this week after he removed world number two Felix Auger-Aliassime in the round of 16.

Tiafoe's athleticism and counter-punching speed will pose a very different challenge to Nakashima than Fritz's serve-dominated game. The two Americans have met twice on the ATP Tour and split their career head-to-head one match apiece, making Saturday's semi-final effectively a coin-flip in terms of recent form.

A Historic ATP Semi-Final Line-Up

The four semi-finalists at the Cincinnati Open — Nakashima, Tiafoe, Flavio Cobolli and Arthur Fils — represent an unprecedented configuration for a Masters 1000 event. According to ATP records, it is the first time in the Open Era that all four semi-finalists at Cincinnati are seeking their maiden Masters 1000 title. Regardless of the outcome on Sunday, the champion will be lifting that trophy for the very first time.

Zverev outhits De Minaur to reach first Shanghai semi-final since 2019

Cobolli, who overcame Tommy Paul in a hard-fought three-set quarter-final, takes on Fils in the other semi-final on Saturday evening. For the Italian, it is his first ever appearance in a Masters 1000 semi-final. Fils, by contrast, is making his third Masters 1000 semi-final of 2026 alone — an extraordinary pace of deep runs for a player still in his early twenties that underscores how dramatically the French prospect has elevated his game this season.

US Open Implications

For Nakashima, reaching the semi-final carries significant ranking implications ahead of the US Open, which begins 25 August. A victory Saturday would push him into the top ten of the ATP rankings for the first time in his career, potentially earning him a seeding at Flushing Meadows. Fritz, who departs Ohio with a quarter-final exit, remains comfortably inside the top ten heading into the final Grand Slam of the season.

The Nakashima–Tiafoe semi-final is scheduled as the opening match on centre court Saturday afternoon at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
