Ostapenko Retires in Toronto Then Exposes Torrent of Online Abuse

An Early Exit in Toronto

Jelena Ostapenko's second-round match at the 2026 National Bank Open ended in the second set. The Latvian, seeded 26th, lost the first set to Shuai Zhang 6-0 before taking a medical timeout after the third game of the second. Shortly after play resumed she retired, leaving the scoreline at 6-0, 4-0 for Zhang. The nature of the injury was not officially disclosed; Ostapenko had visibly struggled to move freely through the second set and, after consulting the physio, decided against continuing.

Zhang, a 37-year-old Chinese veteran who has played on the WTA tour since 2003, advances to the round of 16 and a meeting with world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who is currently on the form run of her career. For Ostapenko, who won Roland Garros in 2017 and remains one of the most dangerous ball-strikers on the tour on her best days, the early exit leaves her preparation for the hardcourt swing in question.

The Messages

The match result was still being processed when Ostapenko, 29, went onto her Instagram Stories and published a series of messages she had received after the retirement. The content was severe.

One of the messages read: "If you skipped a meal or two, maybe you would win a match or two." Others contained explicit threats. Ostapenko captioned the screenshots: "These great messages that you receive after a very bad day on the court feeling not well (health) wise."

She added directly: "This is what professional athletes have to face after almost each loss." The post was widely shared across tennis media, with the severity of the language and the directness of the response drawing attention across multiple platforms.

A Rarely Spoken Reality

The abuse directed at players after losses — particularly on days tied to betting markets — is documented but seldom surfaced publicly. Anonymous accounts, insulated by platform architecture and the pace of the news cycle, routinely send messages that would constitute harassment in any other context. Ostapenko said she also receives life-threatening messages after defeats on a routine basis, not just body-shaming comments of the kind she published on Wednesday.

The decision to go public rather than delete or report the messages reflects a frustration that the sport's institutions have been slow to address at scale. Other players have spoken in general terms about social media toxicity; few have published specific examples. Ostapenko's post did both.

Zhang Earns a Sabalenka Showdown

On the draw sheet, Shuai Zhang is the beneficiary. The veteran faces Aryna Sabalenka in the next round at the Toronto Masters — a meeting between a player in a historic streak of form and one of the circuit's most experienced survivors. Sabalenka has extended her hard-court winning run to 13 consecutive matches here in Toronto, and lost only one of her last 25 hard-court matches this season.

Ostapenko's fitness for the US Open, which begins in late August, remains an open question following the retirement.
