Andrey Rublev ended a near-17-month wait for an ATP title on Sunday, crushing Luciano Darderi 6-4, 6-3 in 76 minutes to win the Nordea Open in Båstad. The Russian's previous title came in Doha in February 2025, and his dominant display on the Swedish clay confirmed that he is back in the kind of form that once made him a consistent presence in the world's top ten.

Commanding Display on Swedish Clay

From the first game, Rublev looked in complete control. He attacked second serves with conviction, held his own delivery without difficulty and converted the break points that mattered. Darderi, the Italian-Argentine who brought strong clay credentials into the final, had no answer to the pace and depth Rublev generated from the baseline. The first set was sealed 6-4 before the match had found any real momentum for the Italian; the second followed in similar fashion, Rublev breaking at the right moment and serving out comfortably to claim the trophy at the 2026 Nordea Open.

The final scoreline slightly understated Rublev's control throughout. He won 80 per cent of first-serve points and created more break opportunities than his opponent at nearly every stage. Darderi showed his quality earlier in the week but ran into a player at the peak of his game on the day that mattered most.

A Two-Time Bastad Champion

Rublev first won the Nordea Open in 2023, making him a two-time champion at the event. His affinity for Scandinavian clay is clear, and these weeks on this surface have consistently drawn out his most controlled tennis. The 28-year-old has spoken about his desire to return to the world's top ten before the end of 2026, and Sunday's performance is the clearest indication yet that he is capable of doing so. The win is expected to move him from around No. 16 to approximately No. 14 in the PIF ATP Rankings.

For Darderi, the runner-up finish is a significant result in its own right. The 23-year-old's clay-court game continues to develop at a high level, and his week in Båstad — reaching a final and taking on a player of Rublev's calibre — will serve as a reference point for what he can achieve. The Kitzbühel ATP 250 is already underway this week for those competing in the remaining clay events.

Hard Courts on the Horizon

The European clay swing is winding down, and attention will soon shift to the North American hard-court circuit culminating at the US Open in late August. For Rublev, the challenge is to take Sunday's confidence and translate it across surfaces. He has always been a strong all-court player, but his hard-court results in recent seasons have not matched his best clay performances. A title in Båstad — won with this level of conviction — is the ideal platform to build from heading into the most demanding stretch of the season.
