Two Spaniards, One New Frenchwoman: São Paulo's Semifinal Saturday
Paula Badosa and Kaitlin Quevedo have put Spain in both SP Open semifinals; newly French Anna Blinkova stands between Quevedo and the final in a headline-packed day in Brazil.

Spain's Double Presence
Saturday's semifinal day at the SP Open in São Paulo delivers a striking storyline: both last-four matches feature a Spanish player. Paula Badosa, seeded second, will face Argentine Nadia Podoroska in the first semifinal, while Kaitlin Quevedo — who is contesting her first career WTA semifinal — takes on fourth-seeded Anna Blinkova in the second. The fact that Blinkova, Russia-born and newly naturalised as a French citizen, arrives in a Brazilian WTA 250 semifinal under the French flag adds a further dimension to a day packed with storylines.
The SP Open, played on hard courts at the Parque Villa-Lobos in São Paulo, reaches its final stages on Saturday, with the title match also scheduled for the same day. Both Spanish players arrive in excellent form after straight-sets quarterfinal wins on Friday.
Quevedo's Breakthrough Moment
Kaitlin Quevedo has never before reached a WTA singles semifinal. The Spaniard put that right on Friday with a polished 6-3, 6-4 victory over Serbian qualifier Teodora Kostovic in one hour and 42 minutes. Quevedo was consistently the more aggressive player throughout, breaking early in the first set and maintaining control against an opponent who had no answer for her flat groundstrokes from the back of the court.
Now she faces Blinkova, who herself posted a convincing 6-4, 7-5 win over compatriot Anastasia Charaeva in the quarterfinals. Blinkova is the higher-ranked player and the more experienced at WTA level, but Quevedo carries the momentum of a player who has yet to be troubled this week. For the young Spaniard, making a first WTA final would be the biggest result of her career to date.
Blinkova's New French Chapter
Anna Blinkova's appearance in São Paulo carries significance beyond the tennis. The former Russian player, who has been based in Cannes for nearly a decade, recently received French citizenship — making her the second French player inside the world's top 100 alongside Diane Parry. Blinkova has spoken publicly about her long-standing ties to France and her language fluency, and the naturalisation formalises an identity she had already built over years of training on the French Riviera.
Her quarterfinal win over Charaeva was the second straight convincing result since arriving in Brazil. She is now ranked No. 94 and carries fourth-seeded status in the draw. A semifinal appearance in her first tournament representing France adds to the narrative momentum surrounding her change of nationality.
Badosa the Favourite to Advance
In the other semifinal, Paula Badosa enters as the clear favourite against Nadia Podoroska. The Spaniard, seeded second, dismissed American Mary Stoiana 6-4, 6-2 in under 90 minutes on Friday in a performance that suggested she is moving with greater physical freedom than at earlier points in the season. Badosa's movement and the consistency of her groundstrokes were notably sharp throughout the match.
Podoroska, a clay-court specialist from Argentina, reached the last four with a three-set 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 win over Dutch player Suzan Lamens — a result that showed her resilience after losing the second set but also highlighted some vulnerability under sustained pressure. Against Badosa, who hits the ball harder and flatter on hard courts, Podoroska will need to construct points carefully rather than relying on heavy topspin exchanges.
Both semifinals at the SP Open are scheduled for Saturday afternoon local time, with the winner of each progressing directly to the final later the same day.
