Shapovalov Cruises to Los Cabos QF: Five from Five as Defending Champ
Denis Shapovalov is through to the Los Cabos quarterfinals after a 6-3, 6-2 win over Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez, keeping his unbeaten record at the tournament intact with five wins from five career appearances.

The Defending Champion Looks Comfortable
Denis Shapovalov did not need long to book his place in the Los Cabos quarterfinals on Wednesday. The Canadian defending champion dismantled local wild card Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez 6-3, 6-2 in just 66 minutes, extending his all-time record at the Mexican hard-court tournament to five wins from five. No other player in the current draw has managed a perfect career record here. Shapovalov is playing like he owns the place — which, in a sense, he does.
The match was one-directional almost from the opening game. Shapovalov served with precision, used his slice backhand to neutralise Pacheco Mendez's rallying game, and produced his most controlled hard-court tennis of the week whenever his opponent threatened to make a set of it. He broke in the fourth and eighth games of the opening set, held comfortably to close 6-3, then reproduced the same template in the second, converting his two break opportunities cleanly and wrapping up with a forehand winner into the open court.
From Comeback to Cruise Control
The contrast with Shapovalov's first-round performance was stark. Against Rinky Hijikata in round one, the Canadian had been taken apart in the opening set, losing 2-6 before refocusing to win 6-3, 6-2. According to reports, he dedicated that win to his wife Mirjam, whose birthday fell on match day — a personal moment that seemed to reset his mindset mid-tournament. The energy carried through. Against Pacheco Mendez, there was no first-set wobble; the champion was on from the first point.
Shapovalov's 2025 season provided the foundation for this kind of form. He had dropped as far as 150 in the world rankings before staging a sustained comeback, winning two ATP titles — including a 500-level event in Dallas with victories over multiple top-10 opponents — and publicly stating his goal of returning to the world's top 10 in 2026. Winning Los Cabos was a key milestone in that resurgence. Defending it would be another.
Lehecka's Exit Opens the Draw
The biggest news from the Wednesday schedule at Los Cabos was not Shapovalov's win but the fall of Jiri Lehecka, the top seed and World No. 12, who was beaten by qualifier Coleman Wong 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a stunning upset. That result removes the clear favourite from the draw and elevates Shapovalov to the status of most likely title winner, given his record at the venue and his current level of performance.
His quarterfinal opponent is Czech youngster Dalibor Svrcina, who advanced when Luciano Darderi retired in the opening set of their second-round match. Svrcina has been solid throughout the week, but the experience gap between the two players is significant. Shapovalov has deep runs at Grand Slams and Masters events to his name; Svrcina is still building his hard-court résumé on the ATP Tour.
Quarterfinal Picture and US Open Timing
The last eight at Los Cabos also features Cameron Norrie, Francisco Cerundolo, Coleman Wong, Jenson Brooksby, and the unpredictable veteran Bernard Tomic, who upset fourth seed Karen Khachanov in the previous round. It is a draw without an obvious second favourite, which suits Shapovalov.
Timing is part of the story. The US Open begins in early September, and hard-court results in late July and August carry weight for seeding, form, and confidence. For a player who has consistently reached the second week in New York — and who has described a top-10 ranking as his 2026 target — a strong finish at Los Cabos would serve as more than just a trophy defence. The quarterfinal against Svrcina is scheduled for Thursday.
