Southeast Asia gets its first WTA 500

The Singapore Tennis Open presented by BNP Paribas is in its opening rounds at the OCBC Arena carrying a new identity. After running as a WTA 250 event since its inception, the tournament has been upgraded to WTA 500 status for 2026 — the only event at that tier anywhere in Southeast Asia and one of just 18 cities worldwide to host a WTA 500. With approximately US$1.2 million in total prize money and a 28-player singles main draw, the upgrade marks a significant step for women's professional tennis in the region. Main-draw play began on Monday, September 21, with the round of 32 continuing on Tuesday and the quarter-finals pencilled in for Friday, September 25.

Sasnovich dismantles Kasatkina in the opening upset

The result of day one that attracted most attention came from Aliaksandra Sasnovich. The Belarusian, ranked No. 132 in the world, defeated Daria Kasatkina — seeded and ranked No. 84 — by a ruthless 7-5, 6-0 in one hour and 19 minutes. A competitive opening set ended 7-5 to Sasnovich; what followed in the second was a one-sided dismantling. Sasnovich won the final eight consecutive games of the match, giving Kasatkina no chance to settle on a surface that had seemed likely to suit the Russian's baseline game. For Kasatkina the early exit is a setback in a season that has yet to produce a title; for Sasnovich it is the kind of landmark result that occasionally punctuates her career and demonstrates the ceiling she can reach on a given day.

Day one of Singapore's WTA 500 debut also featured a strong showing from qualifiers, several of whom advanced through a tight first round to earn a place in the main draw proper. The headline upset from Sasnovich was accompanied by a range of competitive first-round matches that underlined the depth the new prize level has attracted to the OCBC Arena.

Donna Vekić takes on Xinyu Wang in one of the ties attracting early interest, with the Croatian veteran facing a Chinese opponent on hardcourt in the wider Asian swing context. Oleksandra Oliynykova and Maria Sakkari are also among the players in action on Tuesday as the draw begins to take definitive shape ahead of the second round.

Singapore and Seoul: a busy week on the Asian swing

Singapore is running alongside the Korea Open at the Olympic Park Tennis Centre in Seoul (September 21–27), where the round of 32 is also in progress. Players not called up for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen — which opened on Tuesday with its four quarter-final ties — have two strong options in the region this week. With the year-end WTA Finals qualification race entering its critical final stretch, the ranking points on offer in both Singapore and Seoul carry real weight. The path to the Singapore title should become clearer by Wednesday once the second-round field is set.
