Stusek, 18, Wins First WTA Match in Hamburg to Set Up All-German Clash
18-year-old German wildcard Julia Stusek beat Nadia Podoroska 3–6, 6–3, 6–4 for her first WTA career win in Hamburg, setting up an all-German last-16 clash with fifth seed Tamara Korpatsch.

Comeback Win Marks Historic Hamburg Debut
Julia Stusek wrote a small piece of tennis history on Tuesday at the MSC Hamburg Ladies Open. The 18-year-old German wildcard beat former French Open semi-finalist Nadia Podoroska 3–6, 6–3, 6–4 on clay at the Rothenbaum to claim the first WTA main-draw victory of her career. It was a comeback that the crowd on Centre Court will not forget quickly: after dropping the opening set and falling behind early in the second, the teenager turned the match around completely and held her nerve through a final set that lasted well over an hour.
"I'm so happy I was able to turn it around after the first set," Stusek said after converting match point. "Hopefully this was the first of many wins."
Stusek entered the tournament as a wildcard ranked outside the top 400, which makes the achievement all the more striking. Her opponent, Podoroska, reached the semi-finals of Roland Garros in 2020 and has long been a respected operator on clay. The Argentine lost her way in the second and third sets, yet credit belongs squarely to Stusek for raising her level under pressure in front of home supporters. The win took more than two and a half hours and required the teenager to save breaks and recover from poor patches rather than simply outgunning her opponent from the baseline.
Fifth Seed Korpatsch Sets Up All-German Round of 16
Waiting for Stusek in the last 16 is fifth seed Tamara Korpatsch, who booked her spot in difficult circumstances. Korpatsch dropped the opening set 4–6 to Andorra's Victoria Jiménez Kasintseva and fell to 1–3 down in the second before staging a turnaround to take that set 7–5. Jiménez Kasintseva subsequently retired through injury, sending Korpatsch through to face the wildcard on Wednesday.
The all-German round of 16 offers exactly the kind of storyline that home fans hope for on the Rothenbaum clay. Korpatsch carries a formidable clay-court record of 18–9 in 2026 and brings the experience of a top-85 ranking. She will be a significant step up from Podoroska. But Stusek's first win showed she can produce her best under pressure in her home city, and Wednesday's crowd is likely to be firmly in her corner.
Hamburg Delivering Drama Across the Draw
The MSC Hamburg Ladies Open is producing compelling tennis across the board. Second seed Anhelina Kalinina advanced to the last 16 after defeating Spain's Caitlin Quevedo 7–5, 6–4 in the opening round, and the Ukrainian will be considered one of the title favourites as the tournament progresses. Top seed Oleksandra Oliynykova, also Ukrainian, enters the second week as the player everyone must beat on paper.
Mayar Sherif added to the sense of occasion on Wednesday, stepping onto Centre Court for her Hamburg first-round tie against Simona Waltert less than 24 hours after winning the Iași Open title. The Egyptian number one ended a four-year drought without a WTA trophy in Romania and immediately boarded a flight north, demonstrating an appetite for competition that matches her recent form on clay.
For Stusek, however, the immediate picture is simpler. A win over Korpatsch would move the 18-year-old through to the quarter-finals of a WTA 250 event at her home tournament in the same week she claimed her first career victory on tour. That possibility, which would have seemed far-fetched at the start of the week, now feels entirely real.
