Dominant from start to finish

Elina Svitolina moved into the quarterfinals of the National Bank Open with a commanding 6-2, 6-4 victory over Amanda Anisimova in a fourth-round clash between two top-ten players on Saturday in Toronto. The match lasted one hour and nineteen minutes, and Svitolina was the cleaner and more consistent player throughout — a result that rarely felt in doubt despite Anisimova's efforts to alter the course of the contest.

Svitolina broke serve early in both sets and maintained control under pressure. Anisimova saved four match points before eventually capitulating, evidence of her competitive spirit even in a match she was losing decisively. Svitolina held her nerve each time, winning the crucial points when they came and serving out both sets without conceding a single break chance at the finish.

Head-to-head history in Svitolina's favour

The result stretched Svitolina's career record against Anisimova to five wins from six meetings. That historical dominance carries practical weight when pressure builds: when Anisimova tried to shift the tempo and force errors with flatter hitting, Svitolina appeared to draw on familiarity rather than tighten. She knew what was coming and had answers ready.

"I was expecting her to come back," Svitolina said afterwards — a reflection of the Anisimova she knows from years of previous encounters, and evidence that the Ukrainian entered the contest with a clear tactical plan.

The performance also cemented Svitolina's status as a genuine title contender in Toronto. She has not dropped a set since the start of the tournament, and her level of court coverage, ball depth and return quality on Saturday pointed to a player close to her best on a hard-court surface.

Alexandrova in the quarterfinals — a compelling draw

Svitolina's quarterfinal opponent on Monday will be Ekaterina Alexandrova, who provided the stand-out result of Saturday by defeating top seed Aryna Sabalenka 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. Alexandrova has been one of the most consistent ball-strikers in the Toronto draw all week and arrives in the last eight having beaten two seeded opponents in consecutive days. Her flat, aggressive game style from the baseline presents a different set of problems to Svitolina compared with Anisimova's more varied, spin-heavy approach.

A stacked Toronto last eight

The remainder of the Toronto quarterfinal draw is equally loaded. Iga Swiatek advanced after a remarkable comeback victory over Marta Kostyuk, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 — having won just one serve point in the entire first set — and will face Diana Shnaider in the other half of the bracket. Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina and Naomi Osaka are also through, rounding out a last-eight field that, with Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula already eliminated, has no clear favourite heading into Monday at the National Bank Open.
