Tiafoe Stages Miracle Comeback to Reach US Open Semi-Finals
Down two sets to love against compatriot Alex Michelsen, Frances Tiafoe rallied to win 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 — the first such men's QF comeback at the US Open since Federer in 2014.

Down Two Sets, Then Unstoppable
Frances Tiafoe has produced the performance of his career at the 2026 US Open. Down two sets to love against compatriot Alex Michelsen in their all-American quarter-final on Arthur Ashe Stadium, the 28-year-old 11th seed refused to fold. He dug deeper than he ever has in New York, eventually winning 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (6) across four memorable hours to advance to the semi-finals.
The achievement carries a historical footnote: it was the first time a player had overturned a two-set deficit in the men's US Open quarter-finals since Roger Federer did precisely that against Gaël Monfils in 2014. Tiafoe, now in his 42nd Grand Slam appearance, has twice before reached the last four at Flushing Meadows — in 2022 and 2024 — and he is back.
Michelsen's First Half Belonged to Him
For more than an hour, the match looked like it was heading in only one direction. Michelsen, just 22 years old and playing his 13th Grand Slam, had never previously advanced beyond the second round at Flushing Meadows. Yet on the biggest court in American tennis he showed no sign of intimidation. His flat groundstrokes and a reliable serve kept Tiafoe at arm's length through the opening two sets, both claimed with relative comfort.
There was no single moment of collapse, more a slow unravelling that began as Tiafoe started feeding on the noise inside Arthur Ashe. He found an opening in the third set and converted a break at precisely the right moment. Michelsen, perhaps sensing the momentum shift, lost a fraction of his edge. Tiafoe closed out the third set 7-5 and the crowd, which had been watching quietly, erupted.
From there the narrative changed entirely. Tiafoe dominated the fourth set 6-3, barely allowing his opponent back in. The fifth set was tightly contested throughout, both men holding serve with purpose until the tiebreak. Tiafoe won it 7-6, dropping to his knees on match point as the Ashe crowd rose to their feet in unison.
Six Americans, Two in the Last Four
The 2026 US Open began with a remarkable six Americans reaching the men's quarter-finals — the most since 2002 — and Tiafoe's win keeps that momentum alive into the semi-finals. His opponent will come from the other all-American showdown, or from Tiafoe facing world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard takes on No. 8 seed Ben Shelton in Wednesday night's headline match on Arthur Ashe, with the winner booking a Thursday semi-final against Tiafoe.
A Tiafoe-Shelton semi-final would represent a genuine statement for a new era of American men's tennis — two players who belong in the conversation, not just filling a draw. A Tiafoe-Alcaraz rematch, recalling the 2022 semi-final that ended Tiafoe's best previous run here, would carry its own narrative weight.
A Career Night With More to Come
Tiafoe has never won a Grand Slam title. His 2022 US Open run, which included a memorable victory over Andrey Rublev before Alcaraz ended his dream, remains the high watermark of his major career — until now. Coming back from two sets down in a quarter-final, against a younger, in-form player on a big occasion, is a different level of achievement altogether.
As for Michelsen, the exit still represents the finest result of his Grand Slam career. A quarter-final at 22 years old on the Arthur Ashe stage, against a player of Tiafoe's calibre, is a serious statement of intent for the years ahead.
The men's semi-final line-up at the US Open 2026 will be complete by Wednesday night; Tiafoe, already through, watches and waits.
