Zverev Outlasts Norrie in Cincinnati Late-Night Battle
Top seed Alexander Zverev survived a first-set deficit to beat Cameron Norrie 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in a gruelling late-night match, advancing to the third round of the ATP Masters 1000 in Cincinnati.

Alexander Zverev's Cincinnati title challenge began later than most on Saturday night — and came with a significant early scare. The German top seed and 2021 Cincinnati champion eventually saw off Britain's Cameron Norrie 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in a second-round encounter at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, but the two hours and 35 minutes of play stretched into the early hours of Sunday morning and required a near-complete transformation in Zverev's form between sets.
Norrie Takes Control from the Start
The match began deep in the evening, following a long day of second-round action that had already produced the tournament's biggest shock — Thiago Agustín Tirante's dismissal of Novak Djokovic. By the time Zverev walked on court, the conditions were cool and the crowd sparse, but Norrie was alert from the first game.
The Briton, a former world number eight who has rebuilt his competitiveness on the North American hard-court swing, played with focus and aggression. He kept the ball deep, exploited Zverev's tendency to come into rallies at half-pace and held his own serve without difficulty. Zverev's first-serve percentage hovered below 50 percent at points, his forehand lacked its usual venom, and a series of double-faults handed Norrie additional free points. The Briton closed out the set 6-3 with authority, and for a time it appeared that Cincinnati might be about to register another seeded casualty.
The German Finds His Range
The second set told a completely different story. Zverev came out with heavier groundstrokes, his topspin forehand suddenly finding the corners it had been missing, and his first-serve percentage climbed sharply. Norrie, who had dictated the early exchanges, found himself drawn into longer rallies that gradually eroded his position. A break in the fourth game proved decisive, and Zverev took the set 6-3 to level the match.
The third set was more of the same. Zverev imposed his preferred baseline game — heavy crosscourt forehands forcing Norrie wide, then quick changes of direction to the open court — and broke early to take control. Norrie showed commendable fight and refused to capitulate, but his ability to hurt Zverev in the rallies had diminished significantly. The German closed out the set 6-3 and the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to book his place in the third round.
A Packed Sunday Awaits
With his second-round win secured, Zverev moves into the next phase of the Cincinnati ATP 1000, where the draw will begin to take genuine shape. The 2021 champion is among the clearest favourites to go deep, and his recovery after losing the first set against a competitive opponent will do his confidence no harm.
Sunday's schedule brings the first matches for several other top seeds yet to take the court. Ben Shelton, the defending Montreal champion and eighth seed, faces qualifier Jaime Faria in the evening session, while sixth seed Taylor Fritz takes on fellow American Alex Michelsen. Third seed Daniil Medvedev is also in action against Argentine qualifier Marco Trungelliti. For all three, Cincinnati represents the last significant competitive staging post before the US Open, which begins on 24 August in New York.
Zverev has already passed his first test. Whether his second-set recovery against Norrie signals a settling of form — or whether the early wobble will resurface — remains the key question heading into the business end of the draw.
