Five-three, and a match paused for a friend

Fifth seed Mirra Andreeva reached her first US Open quarterfinal on Tuesday with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Anastasia Potapova — but the moment that will be remembered longest came when the result was nearly certain. Leading 5-3 in the deciding set, Potapova lunged for a running forehand and collapsed to the hardcourt clutching her left knee. Andreeva immediately crossed the net.

The French Open champion crouched beside her opponent, rested her hand on Potapova's shoulder and guided her toward the bench so medical staff could attend. Potapova returned to the court with her knee heavily strapped, but was unable to win another point. The two players held a long embrace at the net as the match concluded, 2 hours and 27 minutes after the first rally.

"Nastya — she's my good friend," Andreeva said in her on-court interview. "I can imagine what she's going through and I have goosebumps on my body."

A friendship older than this rivalry

The warmth between the two Russian players was no formality. Andreeva has spoken of looking up to Potapova since childhood — Potapova won the junior Wimbledon title in 2016, when Andreeva was nine years old — and the two regularly practise together on tour. Potapova was among the players Andreeva cited when asked who she most admired in the locker room.

The draw had placed them on opposite sides of the net earlier in 2026, in a Linz final that Andreeva won by the almost identical scoreline of 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. On both occasions Potapova pushed hard before falling short; on both occasions the relationship between them felt bigger than the result. In New York, Potapova had been one of the tournament's stories, climbing from No. 97 to No. 25 in the world this season and reaching the round of 16 by defeating higher-ranked opponents.

French Open champion reaches first US Open quarterfinal

For the 19-year-old Andreeva, Tuesday's win marks a career landmark. The Roland-Garros title she claimed in 2026 confirmed her as one of the game's leading forces, and she has now reached at least the quarterfinal stage at three of the four Grand Slams. The US Open was the last major on that list — until today.

Her quarterfinal opponent will be fourth seed Coco Gauff, who dismantled compatriot Iva Jovic 6-1, 6-4 on Tuesday without dropping a set at any stage of this US Open. Andreeva — Roland-Garros 2026 — against Gauff — US Open 2023 — is the kind of quarterfinal that draws in fans who do not usually follow tennis.

All eight women's quarterfinalists are confirmed at Flushing Meadows. Top seed Aryna Sabalenka, bidding for a third consecutive US Open title, faces Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova. Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro meet in an all-American quarterfinal. Elena Rybakina, who crushed Naomi Osaka 6-1, 6-4 in the day's other featured match, takes on qualifier Qinwen Zheng with the world No. 1 ranking on the line. Play resumes on Wednesday.
