Davidovich Fokina saves match point to stun Tiafoe in Shanghai thriller
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina saved a match point and beat seventh seed Frances Tiafoe 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(6) for his first top-10 win of 2026. Next up: a Chengdu final rematch with Hurkacz.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina came within a single point of defeat on Sunday at the Rolex Shanghai Masters – and walked off the winner of one of the most dramatic matches of the week. The 25th-seeded Spaniard beat seventh seed Frances Tiafoe 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(6) in a third-round contest that lasted close to three hours, earning his first victory over a top-10 opponent this season.
Afterwards, Davidovich Fokina summed up his mood with three words written on the courtside camera lens: "I am back."
A match point saved, a slip and a forehand
The decisive moment came deep in the final set. Serving at 5-6, Davidovich Fokina faced a match point. Tiafoe slipped and fell backward during the rally, and the Spaniard punished the opening with a forehand winner to stay alive, according to Tennis Now. The set went to a tie-break, and Davidovich Fokina converted his first match point to close out the win 8-6.
That escape was only the last in a series. Tiafoe had repeatedly threatened the Davidovich Fokina serve in the decider, most notably at 3-3 when the Spaniard trailed 0-40. Each time, Davidovich Fokina found an answer, attacking with cross-court backhands and even throwing in a diving volley, as Spanish outlet Punto de Break described. The American vented his frustration on his racquet after the final point.
Tiafoe had opened his campaign with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Yannick Hanfmann, while Davidovich Fokina had dismissed Jenson Brooksby 6-1, 6-3 in his first match. The American led their head-to-head 3-1 before Sunday, including a win at the 2025 Miami Open.
A comeback season gathers pace
The result caps a strong autumn for Davidovich Fokina, who returned from an injury sustained in July. He arrived in Shanghai as a two-time titlist in 2026, having won in Mallorca in June and then claimed his first hard-court crown in Chengdu at the start of the Asian swing. Sunday's win lifted his season record to 29-16, according to Tennis Now.
Beating top-10 players has historically been a hurdle for the 27-year-old from Málaga: this was only his 13th such victory in 49 attempts. Doing it on one of the biggest stages of the autumn, and from match point down, gives him a real chance to make a deep run at a Masters 1000 event.
For Tiafoe, the defeat is a setback in his push to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin, where every round at a Masters 1000 event carries significant points at this stage of the season.
Chengdu final rematch with Hurkacz
Davidovich Fokina's reward is a round-of-16 meeting with Hubert Hurkacz – the same opponent he beat in the Chengdu final only weeks ago. The Pole is in excellent form in Shanghai. After ending an eight-match losing run against Novak Djokovic in the second round, Hurkacz overcame home wildcard Zhou Yi 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 on Sunday, firing 18 aces in one hour and 41 minutes.
Hurkacz, the 2023 Shanghai champion, missed the tournament in 2024 and 2025 and has now won nine straight matches at the event. His big serve will test Davidovich Fokina in a way that Tiafoe's baseline game did not – but the Spaniard already knows from Chengdu how to solve that puzzle.
The winner will reach the quarter-finals of a draw that has already lost Djokovic and third seed Ben Shelton, who fell to Frenchman Arthur Géa on Sunday. Top seed Alexander Zverev also remains in contention after beating Quentin Halys.
