Gauff, Rybakina and Osaka Sweep Into Toronto Round of 16
Coco Gauff beat Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-4 for a fourth straight win over the Greek. Elena Rybakina fought back to beat Ann Li 6-2, 7-5, while Naomi Osaka dispatched Elise Mertens 6-1, 6-2 in 71 minutes.

Three of the biggest names in women's tennis marched into the round of 16 at the National Bank Open in Toronto on Friday, with Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina and Naomi Osaka all winning their third-round matches to set up what promises to be a loaded last 16 in Canada.
Gauff Continues to Haunt Sakkari
Gauff extended her mastery over Maria Sakkari to four consecutive straight-sets victories, dismissing the Greek 6-1, 6-4 in one hour and 16 minutes. The third seed broke serve in every return game of the first set, racing to a 4-0 lead, and never relinquished control despite a more competitive second set. "I'm happy with how I played today. Maria is a tough opponent. Her level definitely raised toward the end of that second set. But I'm glad I was able to close it out," Gauff said after the match. The win improves her head-to-head record against Sakkari to 7-5, making the Greek the opponent she has defeated most often in her professional career.
Rybakina Fights Off Ann Li's Late Surge
It was less straightforward for Elena Rybakina, who had to dig deep to get past American qualifier Ann Li 6-2, 7-5 in one hour and 26 minutes. Having taken the first set comfortably, Rybakina found Li a stubborn opponent in the second: the American broke to lead 5-3 and twice held set points while serving for the set. Rybakina saved both and broke back in consecutive games to eventually close out 7-5 — the kind of resilient performance that champions produce under pressure. The second seed now enters the round of 16 having been tested in a way the scoreline barely reflects.
Osaka Overpowers Mertens in 71 Minutes
Naomi Osaka produced a clinical display to eliminate Elise Mertens 6-1, 6-2 in just 71 minutes, extending her career head-to-head advantage over the Belgian to 6-3. Osaka won 73 per cent of her service points while Mertens managed only 45. The Japanese player converted four of eight break-point opportunities and saved all three she faced on her own serve. It was her sixth win in nine career meetings with Mertens and placed her firmly among the favourites to advance deep into the week. She will next face Leylah Fernandez, who earlier produced one of the tournament's biggest upsets by defeating Mirra Andreeva.
A Round of 16 Loaded with Star Power
Gauff, Rybakina and Osaka join Iga Swiatek, Jessica Pegula and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka — who are all in action in the fourth round on Saturday — in what is shaping up as one of the most competitive rounds of 16 the Toronto event has seen. With Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova already gone and Andreeva also out, the path to the title remains wide open.
