Guadalajara: Kostyuk Opens Top-10 Account With Townsend Win
World No. 10 Marta Kostyuk came back from a first-set loss to beat Taylor Townsend 6-7(0), 6-3, 6-2 in her first match as a top-10 player at the Guadalajara WTA 500 round of 16.

First Match as a Top-Ten Player
Marta Kostyuk made an immediate impression as a world top-10 player at the Guadalajara WTA 500 on Tuesday, defeating Taylor Townsend 6-7(0), 6-3, 6-2 to advance into the quarter-finals. The Ukrainian had climbed to world No. 10 in the rankings published after the US Open — where she reached the fourth round — and this was her first match carrying that new status. Elena Rybakina's title win at the US Open reshuffled the standings and pushed Kostyuk inside the elite tier for the first time in her career, making her the third player to break into the top 10 for the first time in 2026.
Townsend, who had beaten Tatjana Maria in the opening round, started with conviction. The left-handed American pushed forward to the net at every opportunity, backed up by an attacking serve, and claimed a ruthless tiebreak to take the opening set. But Kostyuk regrouped with purpose. From the second set onwards she dictated from the baseline, denying Townsend the initiative and posting a comfortable 6-3 before closing out 6-2 in the third. The comeback underlined the resilience that has defined her 2026 season, in which she has won three WTA titles — including a WTA 1000 crown at the Madrid Open.
Jovic and Samsonova Also Reported Through
Defending champion Iva Jovic, the second seed, is also reported to have advanced, defeating Caroline Dolehide 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in three sets. The 18-year-old from Virginia won this title in 2025 at age 17 — becoming the youngest American to claim a tour-level event since Coco Gauff in 2021 and the youngest WTA 500 winner since Martina Hingis in 1998 — and she has looked composed on the court where her career reached its first peak. Eighth seed Liudmila Samsonova also required three sets, according to available reports, to see off Alycia Parks 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 and book her quarter-final berth.
Parry, Stephens and the Evening Programme
The round of 16 continues into Wednesday, with several notable matches still to be decided. Fourth seed Diane Parry faces Peyton Stearns in a match that could open up the top half of the draw; a Parry victory would make the Frenchwoman a genuine quarter-final favourite. On the other side of the bracket, fifth seed Janice Tjen takes on wild card Sloane Stephens, the former US Open champion who is dangerous on any surface and arrived here after a first-round win over Carole Monnet.
Former Guadalajara champion Magdalena Frech, seeded seventh, faces Caroline Dolehide, while sixth seed Cristina Bucșa and third seed Sára Bejlek are also in action across the next two days. The Stearns match against Parry is one of the headline contests on the remaining schedule.
Quarter-Finals on Thursday, Final on Saturday
The Guadalajara Open quarter-finals are scheduled for Thursday, September 17, with the semi-finals on Friday and the final on Saturday, September 19. Kostyuk enters the last eight as the top seed and world No. 10 with genuine title ambitions after a career-best season. Jovic, the defending champion on the other side of the bracket, will be equally motivated to repeat her 2025 triumph — making a potential final between the two seeds the most anticipated match of the week.
