Winning Start at the USTA Center

Sixteen-year-old Kristina Liutova held her nerve through a difficult second set to beat Tatiana Prozorova 6–4, 4–6, 6–2 in the opening round of US Open qualifying on Tuesday, producing the most significant result of a professional career that began barely six weeks ago. The teenager from Redmond, Washington, walked off court at Flushing Meadows to modest applause from a courtside crowd that may not yet know her name — but the tennis world was paying close attention.

A Career That Started With a Title

Liutova's trajectory is almost implausible in its speed. Born in Moscow, she moved to Redmond with her family in 2020 and has trained almost exclusively in the United States since then, competing primarily on domestic youth circuits with next to no WTA ranking points heading into the summer. In July 2026, she entered the Memphis Classic as her first professional event and won the title — one of the youngest players in the Open Era to claim a WTA tournament on a debut appearance. That victory handed her a ranking and a level of confidence that has carried directly into New York.

Walking onto the qualifying courts at Flushing Meadows just weeks later, she faced a genuinely difficult opener against a player with considerably more experience in Grand Slam environments. She came through it cleanly.

Three Sets and No Signs of Panic

Against Prozorova, Liutova's match had a clear three-act shape. She controlled the opener with flat, penetrating groundstrokes, winning 6–4 and establishing herself as the more dominant player. A shift in momentum in the second set allowed Prozorova to find her range from the baseline and level the match at one set apiece, taking it 6–4. The third set, however, was never genuinely competitive. Liutova broke in the opening games, extended her lead to 5–1 and closed out 6–2, finishing the match with significantly more winners than unforced errors — a statistic that tells its own story at this level of a qualifying draw.

Lola Radivojevic of Serbia, who dispatched Rinaldo Persson 6–4, 6–3 in her own first-round match, waits in round two. The Serbian has navigated Grand Slam qualifying before and will arrive with a tactical plan. Liutova will need more of the same composure she showed in the decider.

The Comparison Everyone Is Already Making

Writing about Liutova without reaching for historical comparisons is almost impossible. Coco Gauff announced herself to the world at Wimbledon at 15, a moment that shifted the WTA's generational conversation overnight. Mirra Andreeva broke into multiple Grand Slam main draws in 2023 with barely more professional experience than Liutova currently holds. Liutova's case is more extreme still: she has never competed professionally outside the United States, and New York is only her second career tournament.

What distinguishes her from most teenagers at an equivalent stage is an apparent absence of the hesitation that typically accompanies this level of exposure. The second-set wobble against Prozorova was real, but within three games of the final set it was gone — corrected without visible distress. Two more victories this week will put Kristina Liutova in the US Open main draw before she turns 17. The round two match against Radivojevic is scheduled for Wednesday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
