Swiatek, Gauff and Andreeva All Through as Women's Day 3 Delivers

Three Seeds, Three Straight-Set Wins

Day nine at the 2026 US Open belonged to the women. Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva all won comfortably in straight sets on Tuesday evening, clearing their first-round hurdles with the kind of authority that underlines why they enter the second week as genuine title threats. Added to the earlier advances of Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula, the women's draw has arrived at the second round with its top names almost entirely intact.

Swiatek was the most dominant of the trio. The Polish former world No. 1 dismantled China's Xinyu Wang 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 28 minutes, surrendering her serve just once in a performance of precision and relentlessness. Wang, ranked in the mid-30s, had no sustained answer to Swiatek's aggressive baseline geometry. Despite being seeded outside the top six at this tournament — a consequence of a difficult 2025 season — Swiatek arrived in New York still hunting her first US Open title, and she looked the part.

Gauff Handles the Home Stage

Fourth seed Coco Gauff negotiated the weight of home expectation at Arthur Ashe Stadium with calm efficiency. The American defeated Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez 6-3, 6-4, dropping serve once and immediately breaking back to limit any sense of vulnerability. Gauff has become adept at these occasions — high-profile, high-pressure, watched by a passionate home crowd — and she carried herself accordingly. Her serve-and-baseline combination is functioning well on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows.

Fifth seed Mirra Andreeva produced the most emphatic display of the three. The 19-year-old Russian, already established as one of the tour's most dangerous young talents, swept past Janice Tjen 6-2, 6-2 in barely more than an hour. Tjen found no traction in the match: Andreeva's first-serve aggression and clean groundstrokes from both wings left her opponent with too little time and too little court to work with. The Russian has developed markedly as a physical presence at majors and looks equipped to challenge deep into this draw.

The WTA Landscape at the Halfway Point of Round One

Tuesday's results completed a near-flawless first round for the top seeds. Defending two-time champion Sabalenka, chasing an extraordinary third consecutive US Open title, had already progressed in dominant fashion. Pegula, the third seed and crowd favourite, also moved through without alarm. The only significant casualty among the seeded names has been Barbora Krejcikova, who fell in round one to Russia's Kamilla Rakhimova. For the rest, the draw is unfolding in an orderly fashion.

The contrast with the men's draw — where Novak Djokovic has already been knocked out and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner is absent through injury — is notable. On the women's side, the order has held, and Tuesday's performances suggested it will continue to do so for some time yet.

What Comes Next

The women's second round opens on Wednesday at the US Open. Pegula headlines the order of play on Arthur Ashe Stadium against Sofia Kenin in an all-American encounter. Sabalenka is also scheduled for action as the second round begins to sort out the contenders from the comfortable early winners. For Swiatek, Gauff and Andreeva, a brief rest before their own second-round tests — the moment when the real measuring starts at a Grand Slam.
