Noskova Outlasts Kostyuk in Three-Set Thriller

Sixth seed Linda Noskova claimed her place in the US Open quarterfinals with a hard-fought 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 victory over 11th seed Marta Kostyuk on Sunday at Flushing Meadows. The Czech player — Wimbledon champion earlier this summer — will now face top seed and two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka for a place in the last four.

Noskova seized control early, taking the opening set 7-5 with assertive baseline tennis that left the Ukrainian with little room. Kostyuk, however, proved anything but a passive victim. The 11th seed raised her level considerably in the second set, matching Noskova's aggression and dictating from the baseline to level the match at one apiece. The deciding set was tight throughout, with both players holding nerve at crucial moments. The match turned on a single shot: Kostyuk's backhand return found the net on Noskova's sixth match point, handing the Wimbledon champion her passage to the quarterfinals.

A Grand Slam Collision in the Last Eight

The quarterfinal against Sabalenka sets up a contest between two of the season's foremost performers. The Belarusian world number one is chasing a piece of history: a third consecutive US Open title would make her the first woman to achieve that feat since Serena Williams, who took three in a row between 2012 and 2014. Sabalenka dispatched Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-3 in the fourth round without conceding a set, extending her winning streak at Flushing Meadows to 17 consecutive matches. She has not dropped a set at any point in this year's tournament.

Noskova arrives with the confidence of a multiple Grand Slam champion. Her Wimbledon title demonstrated she can impose herself on grass; her performance through New York — including Sunday's three-set test — underlines she is equally dangerous on hard courts. Pushing through a second-set wobble to close out the decisive set on her sixth match point is precisely the quality of mental fortitude that top-five tennis demands. A run to the final would rank among the year's most remarkable achievements.

Kostyuk Exits on a Cruel Margin

For Marta Kostyuk, the loss ends a competitive run at Flushing Meadows. The Ukrainian had navigated her way through the draw with composed, consistent tennis and showed in this match that she belongs at the top table. Forcing a deciding set against the Wimbledon champion was no mean feat, and her performance across the three sets underscored why she is seeded 11th. The final backhand into the net encapsulated the narrow margins that decide matches at this level.

Women's Quarterfinal Draw Takes Shape

Sunday's play confirmed all four women's quarterfinalists from the top half of the draw. Alongside the Noskova-Sabalenka showdown, third seed Jessica Pegula and 26th seed Emma Navarro will contest an all-American quarterfinal — the first such pairing in the women's singles at the US Open since 2015. Pegula beat Sorana Cîrstea 6-3, 6-4; Navarro dismissed Anna Kalinskaya 6-4, 6-2. Four more women's fourth-round matches are scheduled for Monday before the quarterfinals begin from Tuesday.
