Hurkacz, Medvedev Head Monday Semis in Chengdu and Hangzhou
Hurkacz faces Shapovalov and Medvedev meets Safiullin in a dual semifinal day across China, as the ATP 250 events in Chengdu and Hangzhou reach their penultimate rounds.

Chengdu: Hurkacz Eyes First Final in Over a Year
Monday's Chengdu Open semifinals pit two contrasting stories against each other. Hubert Hurkacz, seeded fifth, faces seventh seed Denis Shapovalov for a place in Tuesday's final, with the Pole holding a 5-1 advantage in their career head-to-head. Hurkacz reached this stage by defeating qualifier Lloyd Harris 7-6(10), 6-4 in a closely contested quarterfinal that required a super-tiebreak to settle the opening set. It marks his first ATP semifinal in more than a year, a milestone that has added momentum to his week in Sichuan province.
Shapovalov set up the clash with a gritty three-set win over Alejandro Tabilo-conqueror Adrian Mannarino — the Frenchman who eliminated the defending champion in the previous round. The Canadian, back inside the top 50 after a spell outside the rankings' upper reaches, has looked fluid throughout the week. Despite the lopsided head-to-head record, Shapovalov's form and the conditions on Chengdu's hard courts could give him an opening.
The other Chengdu semifinal features Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who dismantled Alexandre Müller 6-1, 7-5, against Georgian qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili. The veteran Basilashvili — a former top-15 player who has been working his way back through qualifying — eliminated Jenson Brooksby to reach the last four. He brings the unpredictability of a player with nothing to lose.
Hangzhou: Medvedev and Safiullin Meet for the First Time
Over in Hangzhou, the top half of the draw throws up a fascinating matchup: Daniil Medvedev, the top seed, faces compatriot Roman Safiullin in what will be their first-ever professional meeting. Medvedev came through a testing quarterfinal against Hong Kong's Chak Lam Coleman Wong, 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3, dropping the second set to a local wildcard before reasserting control. The former world No. 1 has spoken publicly about rebuilding his ranking and form following a mixed 2025, and a title run in Hangzhou would represent a significant step.
Safiullin, meanwhile, beat American Bu Yunchaokete 6-3, 6-3 in a composed display that belied the pressure of a big-tournament quarterfinal. The Russian has been in strong form throughout the Asian swing and will draw on the fact that Medvedev will have no historical edge to exploit — their head-to-head begins today.
Andrey Rublev, the second seed, faces French qualifier Kyrian Jacquet in the other semifinal after a demanding quarterfinal over compatriot Hugo Gaston that required three sets: 6-7(6), 7-6(4), 6-1. Jacquet booked his place with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Hungarian Fabian Marozsan. Should Rublev advance and Medvedev do the same, a potential all-Russian final in Hangzhou would be on the cards — a scenario that underlines the depth Russia continues to produce at the top of the men's game.
Finals Scheduled for Tuesday
Both Chengdu and Hangzhou finals are set for Tuesday, September 29. The Japan Open in Tokyo continues in parallel through to September 30, keeping the Asian swing at full speed heading into the October Masters 1000 season. None of the four semifinalists in either city have won an ATP title in Asia before, adding another layer of storyline to the week's deciders.
