Ostapenko overpowers Shnaider to reach Wuhan semi-finals
Jeļena Ostapenko beat 11th seed Diana Shnaider 7-6, 6-1 to reach the last four in Wuhan for the first time since 2017. Svitolina or Kartal awaits.

Jeļena Ostapenko is back in the semi-finals at the Wuhan Open for the first time in nine years. The Latvian, ranked 34th, beat 11th seed Diana Shnaider 7-6, 6-1 in Friday's quarter-final on Center Court. It was their first meeting on tour.
Shnaider, ranked 13th, had come into the match as the favourite. She had not dropped a set all week, beating Katie Boulter, Yulia Putintseva and sixth seed Karolina Muchova. Ostapenko had needed far longer to get through her draw, but she was clearly the sharper player once the first set was decided.
Serve makes the difference
The first set was tight, with very little separating the two. Once Ostapenko had won it in a tie-break, the match turned quickly. According to the match statistics published by Tennis.com, Ostapenko served seven aces to Shnaider's none and held in nine of her ten service games. She took three of her nine break points. Shnaider converted only one of ten.
On first serve the numbers were almost even: Ostapenko won 29 of 40 points, Shnaider 28 of 40. The difference came in the big moments. Ostapenko put away her chances, while Shnaider kept failing to turn pressure into breaks. In the second set the 2017 Roland Garros champion pulled away to win it 6-1.
A run built on survival
Ostapenko's week has been anything but straightforward. She opened by beating Daria Kasatkina 6-1, 6-1. Then she came from a set down to stop Jessica Pegula 2-6, 7-6, 6-3, saving three match points along the way, according to the WTA. In the last 16 she needed three sets again against Leylah Fernandez, winning 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.
Her only previous semi-final in Wuhan came in 2017, the season she won her Grand Slam title in Paris. Now she has a fresh chance in a draw that has lost its top names. Aryna Sabalenka went out to Ann Li in the second round, Pegula lost to Ostapenko, and only one top-five seed was still standing at the quarter-final stage.
Shnaider's strong week ends
For Shnaider, the defeat ends a week that had included her fourth career top-10 win against Muchova. Before Friday she had a 32-20 record in 2026, with semi-finals at Roland Garros, Adelaide and Washington. After beating Muchova she praised the work of her team, led by coach Sascha Bajin since August 2025: "It takes a little bit more time to create the team around you. You need to find the right people."
Ostapenko will face either fifth seed Elina Svitolina or Britain's Sonay Kartal in the semi-finals. Their quarter-final is also on Center Court on Friday. Svitolina leads Kartal 2-0 in their head-to-head, while Kartal has not dropped a set since returning from a six-month injury lay-off. The other two quarter-finals are Iga Świątek against Ann Li and Maria Sakkari against Maja Chwalińska.
