Davidovich Fokina edges Hurkacz in a tiebreak thriller

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is a champion again. The Spaniard beat Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 7-6(7) in the Chengdu final on Tuesday, saving the match with six of the last seven points after trailing 3-6 in the deciding tiebreak. The win capped a remarkable week for the 27-year-old, who had not played a competitive match since Umag in July because of a back injury and arrived in China with almost no match rhythm. He did not face a single break point across the entire final, closing it out in one hour and 46 minutes.

"After that win in Mallorca, I released all the bad energy that I had in finals. I now know how to deal with the pressure in the tight moments," Davidovich Fokina said afterward. The comment referenced a difficult stretch of five straight tour-level final losses he endured before finally breaking through in Mallorca in June, including a painful defeat in Washington to Alex de Minaur after holding three championship points.

A second title built on a shaky comeback

It is Davidovich Fokina's second title of 2026 and his seventh tour-level final overall. He reached the title match by outlasting Nikoloz Basilashvili in three sets in the semifinal, while Hurkacz needed three sets of his own to see off Denis Shapovalov. For the Pole, it was his first final appearance since Geneva last year, and the runner-up finish still marks a step forward after a stretch of early exits.

Medvedev overpowers Rublev with 23 aces in Hangzhou

Across the country in Hangzhou, Daniil Medvedev claimed his third title of the season, beating fellow Russian Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-4 in a final that lasted just 93 minutes. Medvedev fired 23 aces and committed only two double faults to seal the all-Russian showdown, extending his head-to-head lead over Rublev to 8-2 and collecting the 24th tour-level trophy of his career.

"There is always a tiny bit more on the line. I think I handled it well. I played good in the important moments and I'm really happy with my level," Medvedev said after the win, before turning to the crowd: "I'm really happy to see you in this final. Sorry that I served good today, but hopefully we can finish the season this strong."

Paul ends Bergs' Shanghai run after Alcaraz upset, faces Medvedev next

Rublev had arrived in the final off the back of his 400th tour-level win, a straight-sets victory over Kyrian Jacquet, but could not solve Medvedev's serve on the day. Medvedev, for his part, beat Roman Safiullin in straight sets in his own semifinal. The result also puts Medvedev level with Michael Chang, Stefan Edberg and John McEnroe for the 11th-most hard-court titles of the Open Era, and lifts him to eighth in the ATP Live Race to Turin as he chases a return to the season-ending Finals after missing out in 2025.

A busy week closes on the Asian swing

The two ATP 250 titles wrap a packed stretch of the Asian hard-court swing that also included the Laver Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup finals. Attention on tour now turns fully to Beijing and Tokyo, where the ATP 500 and WTA 1000 fields get underway this week with Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev among the headline draws.
