Fernandez Wins Singapore WTA 500 in Nine-Game Final Blitz
Leylah Fernandez claimed her sixth WTA title with a dominant 7-5, 6-0 win over Talia Gibson in Singapore, winning the final nine games of the match.

Nine straight games seal Fernandez's sixth career title
Leylah Fernandez is the 2026 Singapore Tennis Open champion. The Canadian defeated first-time WTA finalist Talia Gibson 7-5, 6-0 in one hour and 38 minutes on Sunday at the Singapore Indoor Stadium to claim her sixth career WTA title and her second at the 500 level.
The final set a emphatic tone. Gibson had been competitive enough to level at 5-5 in the opening set, but from that moment Fernandez hit a level of tennis that her opponent simply could not match. Nine consecutive games — two to close the first set, six to sweep the second — produced a scoreline as emphatic as it was deserved given the calibre of opponents Fernandez had beaten to reach the final.
"You guys made this week extremely special with all your encouragement, the energy and the positivity," Fernandez told the crowd at Singapore Indoor Stadium following her victory.
A week of elite scalps
Fernandez's run through the draw was arguably the hardest of any player in the field. In the quarterfinals she defeated Roland Garros champion and top seed Mirra Andreeva in straight sets — the standout result of the entire tournament week. Against Roland Garros runner-up Maja Chwalinska in the semi-finals, she was tested in a three-set battle, dropping the first set 1-6 before rallying to win 6-4, 6-2.
Having already shown she could fight back from a set down, she saved her most commanding performance for the final. Against Gibson — who had previously beaten former world No. 1 Maria Sakkari on her way to a first WTA Tour final — Fernandez's second set was immaculate: she broke every Gibson service game and conceded just one game across 28 minutes of play.
Rankings rise and career context
Ranked 31st in the world heading into the tournament, Fernandez is projected to move to No. 26 in Monday's updated PIF WTA Rankings — her highest position in more than two years. The title represents a significant marker of her return from an injury-disrupted 2025 season, and at 23 she has now beaten the two best clay-court players in the world on hard courts within the same week.
It is also her first WTA 500 title on a hard surface, expanding the range of surfaces at which she has won at the top level. In the past month alone she has produced the consistent, high-quality results that her talent has long promised but that fitness issues previously prevented her from sustaining.
Gibson's breakthrough week acknowledged
For 22-year-old Gibson the experience of a first WTA Tour final — however one-sided the conclusion — represents a genuine step forward. Her run included victories over Sakkari and others in a field stacked with ranked opponents, and she will take considerable confidence into the remainder of the hard-court season.
Fernandez moves on to the WTA Beijing Open next week, where she will be seeded inside the top eight. Having beaten the Roland Garros champion and runner-up in successive matches, she travels to China as the most in-form player on the women's tour entering what promises to be one of the deepest draws of the season.
