Géa downs Menšík to reach Shanghai quarter-finals on Masters debut
Arthur Géa, ranked No. 241 in January, beat world No. 15 Jakub Menšík 7-6, 6-4 to reach his first Masters 1000 quarter-final. He is now guaranteed a top-50 debut.

Arthur Géa keeps going at the Rolex Shanghai Masters. Two days after beating world No. 4 Ben Shelton for his first top-10 win, the 21-year-old Frenchman beat world No. 15 Jakub Menšík 7-6, 6-4 on Tuesday. He is through to the quarter-finals in his first ever Masters 1000 main draw.
Clean when it mattered
Neither player dropped serve in the opening set. Géa then took control of the tie-break, winning its first six points according to Tennis Majors, and took it 7-4. Menšík reached the Shanghai quarter-finals in 2024 and arrived on a 21-match hard-court winning streak against players outside the top 50. Here he could not find a way past Géa's movement and steadiness from the baseline.
In the second set the Czech's serve began to falter. At deuce in the decisive game he badly mishit a smash, and Géa took the break. Menšík still pushed for a way back, and French outlet Univers Tennis reports that Géa had to save a break point in the final game with a passing shot before he served it out.
Géa has now beaten Jaime Faria, the 30th seed Ugo Humbert, Shelton and Menšík this week. He has not dropped a set against either of his two top-20 opponents.
From No. 241 to the top 50
His rise this year has been steep. Géa started 2026 ranked No. 241. Earlier this season he won his first ATP title in Los Cabos, beating Denis Shapovalov in the final. At the US Open he came through as a lucky loser and reached the fourth round, where Botic van de Zandschulp stopped him.
The Shanghai run takes him further. Tennis Majors reports he is now guaranteed to make his top-50 debut at No. 44 or better when the rankings update after the tournament.
The defeat is a blow for Menšík in a different way. Spanish outlet Punto de Break notes that the Czech's hopes of reaching the ATP Finals in Turin have taken a heavy hit, as he is chasing one of the eight spots.
Davidovich Fokina next
Géa's quarter-final opponent is Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The Spaniard, the 25th seed, came back from a set down against Hubert Hurkacz and saved two match points before winning in a third-set tie-break. He came to Shanghai straight from winning the title in Chengdu, so Géa will face one of the form players of the Asian swing for a place in his first Masters 1000 semi-final.
In the other quarter-final involving Tuesday's winners, top seed Alexander Zverev meets Alex de Minaur. Zverev needed three sets and two tie-breaks to get past Alexander Bublik, while de Minaur has yet to drop a set. For Géa, who arrived in Shanghai without a single Masters 1000 main-draw win to his name, the pressure is on the other side of the net. A fifth straight win would make him the surprise semi-finalist of the week.
