Eala wins nine straight games to beat Gibson and reach Tokyo quarters
Alexandra Eala recovered from a set down to beat Talia Gibson 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 at the Toray Pan Pacific Open and set up a rematch with Diana Shnaider in the quarter-finals.

Alexandra Eala is into the quarter-finals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open. The 21-year-old Filipina came from a set down to beat Australia's Talia Gibson 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 in Tokyo on Wednesday, winning the last nine games of the match to book a quarter-final against Diana Shnaider.
A painful first set, then total control
The opening set slipped away in frustrating fashion. Serving to stay in it in the tenth game, Eala let two consecutive game points go begging and Gibson, the world No. 38, took the set 6-4.
The response was immediate. Eala broke at the start of the second set, broke again in the seventh game and closed out the set by taking its last three games. From there the match belonged to her: according to GMA News, she limited Gibson to just five points across the first four games of the third set on her way to a bagel. The match lasted one hour and 53 minutes, with Eala striking nine aces and 29 winners, as tallied by Tennis Now.
It was a familiar outcome against a familiar opponent. The two have crossed paths since their junior and lower-tier days, and Eala has now beaten Gibson in all three of their meetings, including two wins on the ITF circuit.
A turnaround on the Asian swing
The result matters beyond one match. Eala, ranked No. 19, had won only once across her first three tournaments of the Asian swing before arriving in Tokyo, and this is her first quarter-final of that stretch. It is also her Tokyo debut, and she has made the most of it: she opened with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Britain's Mika Stojsavljevic before Wednesday's comeback.
Tennis Now counts this as Eala's sixth quarter-final of 2026 and her 25th hard-court win of the season, lifting her overall record for the year to 36-23. Tokyo is a strong field to do it in: world No. 1 Elena Rybakina leads the draw, which also features defending champion Belinda Bencic and four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka.
Shnaider rematch next
Standing between Eala and the semi-finals is Shnaider, the world No. 13 and third seed in Tokyo. The Russian reached the last eight with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Wednesday. It is a quick rematch: Shnaider beat Eala in the round of 16 in Ningbo just last week, so the Filipina will have a fresh reference point for how to approach the left-hander.
Elsewhere in the draw, Kamilla Rakhimova and Maya Joint also advanced to the quarter-finals on Wednesday. Rakhimova outlasted Ekaterina Alexandrova in a final-set tie-break, while Alycia Parks dismissed Kimberly Birrell 6-3, 6-1.
The bottom line for Eala is simple: she arrives at the quarter-final having won nine games in a row, and against an opponent who beat her seven days ago, a place in the Tokyo semi-finals is on the line.
