Alex de Minaur is still in the hunt for Turin. The Australian fifth seed beat American Learner Tien 6-4, 6-2 in 78 minutes on Wednesday evening to reach the quarter-finals of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, a result that keeps his late push for the ATP Finals firmly on track.

A 24-shot rally and a one-sided scoreboard

For six games the match was level. Then came the moment that swung it: de Minaur broke in the seventh game of the opening set after a lung-busting 24-shot rally, as reported by Australian Associated Press, and closed out the set. He broke again at the start of the second and never looked back.

The numbers explain why a fairly even serving day turned into a lopsided result. De Minaur won 70 per cent of his service points, converted four of his seven break points and won half of all points on return. He also kept his error count low, with 18 unforced errors to Tien's 39. Against a young opponent who thrives on rhythm from the baseline, that kind of consistency from the Australian left little room to manoeuvre.

What it means for the Race to Turin

De Minaur arrived in Vienna as world No. 10, but the arithmetic for the season finale is unusual this year. With Jannik Sinner out for the rest of the season, his qualifying place passes down the line, which means ninth position in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin is now the final ticket to the eight-man field.

Before Wednesday, Tennis Majors listed Spain's Rafael Jodar in that ninth spot on 3,184 points, with de Minaur tenth on 2,880, Novak Djokovic 11th on 2,840 and Taylor Fritz 12th on 2,695. Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton have already secured their places. By the Tennis Majors calculation, victory over Tien brings de Minaur within 254 points of the cut, while AAP reported that the win provisionally lifts him to ninth in the live rankings, ahead of Jodar.

The pressure from behind is real. Djokovic opened his Basel campaign with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Ugo Humbert and faces Jan-Lennard Struff on Thursday evening, while Fritz celebrated his 29th birthday in Basel with a 6-4, 7-6(3) win over Rinky Hijikata. Jodar, meanwhile, is still alive in Switzerland too, where the winner of his match against Valentin Vacherot will face Holger Rune in the quarter-finals.

Italian test next

Every remaining round in Vienna now carries significant weight for de Minaur. His quarter-final opponent will be either No. 4 seed Flavio Cobolli or Matteo Berrettini, with the two Italians still to play their round-of-16 match. Cobolli is himself in the Turin picture, sitting fifth in the Race on 3,680 points before this week.

With Vienna and Basel running side by side this week, the battle for ninth place could change hands more than once before Sunday. De Minaur's next step is the quarter-final against Cobolli or Berrettini, while Jodar must first get past Vacherot to stay ahead of him.
