Fonseca ends 2026 season early, will not defend Basel title

Joao Fonseca has pulled out of Basel and the Paris Masters, saying he is "still not 100% ready" after an injury-plagued year. The Brazilian now turns his focus to 2027.

Joao Fonseca will not hit another ball on the ATP Tour in 2026. The 20-year-old Brazilian announced on Saturday, in a video posted to Instagram, that he has withdrawn from the Swiss Indoors Basel and the Rolex Paris Masters, ending a season that was shaped as much by injuries as by results.

"My plan was to return during the European swing. But after talking with my team, I realised I'm still not 100% ready to compete at the level I'd like," Fonseca said, adding: "And there is no need to rush things." He did not name the specific injury behind the decision. He said his full attention now goes to recovery and the 2027 season.

A defending champion missing in Basel

The Basel withdrawal hurts most. Twelve months ago, Fonseca won his first ATP 500 title at the St. Jakobshalle, the biggest result of his young career so far. Now the Swiss tournament, which runs from 26 October to 1 November, will be without its defending champion. The draw still has star power, though: Novak Djokovic has already accepted a wildcard as he pushes for a place in Turin.

Paris also had personal meaning for him. Fonseca made his debut at the Masters 1000 event in the French capital in 2024 and reached the second round. This year he will miss the indoor swing altogether. He has not played a match since representing Brazil in the Davis Cup in September.

A year of setbacks

The early end to his season follows a long list of physical problems. Fonseca missed the US Open in August with an abdominal injury, which had already forced him out of Cincinnati before his third-round match. Over the course of the year he also dealt with problems in his right wrist, right shoulder and back. He skipped the entire Asian swing to recover, originally planning to come back for the European indoor events. That plan has now been dropped.

In September, Fonseca spoke openly about how hard his injury-hit year had been. Saturday's announcement confirms that he could not regain full fitness in time to finish the season on court.

Still inside the top 30

Even with all the disruption, the numbers are respectable for a player still at the start of his career. Fonseca has a 20-13 record this season, according to the ATP, and is ranked No. 29 in the world. His best result of 2026 came at Roland Garros, where he reached the quarter-finals. He has two ATP titles to his name.

Not defending his Basel points will cost him ranking ground over the coming weeks, but the decision shows a long-term view. Fonseca has been one of the most closely watched young players in the sport since his breakthrough. He and his team have clearly chosen a full off-season of rehabilitation over a rushed return in the final weeks of the year.

His withdrawals are the latest to hit the indoor events. On the same day, Félix Auger-Aliassime also pulled out of Basel and Brussels with a knee injury picked up at the Shanghai Masters. With Basel starting on 26 October and Paris immediately afterwards, the tournament organisers now have to fill gaps in their fields. Fonseca, meanwhile, will spend the off-season getting fit for 2027.
