Rune saves match point to oust Hurkacz and reach Basel quarter-finals
Holger Rune came from a set down and saved a match point in the deciding tie-break to beat Hubert Hurkacz 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 – his first quarter-final since his Achilles injury.

Holger Rune's comeback in Basel is turning into a proper run. The 23-year-old Dane beat Hubert Hurkacz 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 in the round of 16 of the Swiss Indoors on Wednesday night, saving a match point in the deciding tie-break to reach his first quarter-final since the Achilles injury that kept him off the tour for most of the past year.
A tie-break of nerves
For a set, it looked like Hurkacz's evening. The Pole broke Rune once and took the opener 6-3, his serve giving the Dane little to work with on the fast indoor court at the Basel St. Jakobshalle. Rune answered by taking the second set by the same score and, as the match wore on, his return game grew steadily sharper.
The deciding set brought no breaks at all, and the tie-break swung both ways. According to Flashscore, Rune had a first match point at 6-5 but sent a ball beyond the baseline. Hurkacz then earned a match point of his own, which Rune fended off with solid baseline play before converting his second opportunity to close out a contest of around two hours. The ATP Tour recorded the tie-break as 8-6 in Rune's favour.
It was the second straight match in which Rune has needed a deciding-set tie-break. In the first round, he beat Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-6(5) after leading 5-1 in the final tie-break and watching the Frenchman level at 5-5.
From Stockholm to Basel: 373 days
That win over Halys ended a wait of 373 days for a tour-level victory. Rune injured his Achilles tendon at the Stockholm Open in October 2025, the last tournament where he had won a match on the ATP Tour, and was sidelined for roughly eleven months. He returned via Denmark's Davis Cup tie in September 2026 and then lost early in Tokyo and Shanghai before the breakthrough in Basel.
Beating Hurkacz is a different level of statement. The Pole, ranked No. 28, is one of the most dangerous indoor servers on tour and a former Basel finalist. Rune also had the better of their only previous meeting, a straight-sets win at the Paris Masters in November 2022, the season in which the Dane reached the Basel final and won the Paris title.
Jodar or Vacherot next
In the quarter-finals Rune will face the winner of the round-of-16 match between Rafael Jodar and Valentin Vacherot. Jodar, ranked No. 11, has more riding on Basel than a place in the last eight: the Spaniard currently holds ninth place in the Race to Turin, and with Jannik Sinner out for the season that is the final qualifying spot for the ATP Finals. Monaco's Vacherot is ranked No. 31.
The quarter-final line-up in Basel is coming together around Rune's section. Nuno Borges rallied from a set down to beat Casper Ruud on Wednesday, and Taylor Fritz marked his 29th birthday with a 6-4, 7-6(3) win over Rinky Hijikata. Novak Djokovic, who opened with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Ugo Humbert, meets Jan-Lennard Struff on Thursday evening in the first match of the night session on centre court.
For Rune, the ranking points are only part of the picture. After two deciding-set tie-breaks in three days, he has shown he can hold his nerve again in the tightest moments, and his quarter-final is scheduled for Friday.
