Elena Rybakina needed only one win at the Toray Pan Pacific Open to settle the biggest question left in the women's season, and she got it without much trouble. The top seed beat her Kazakh compatriot Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-3 in 70 minutes on Thursday. The win reaches the quarter-finals of the Tokyo WTA 500 and clinches the 2026 WTA year-end No. 1 ranking for the first time in her career.

She is only the 17th woman to finish a season at the top since the WTA Rankings started in 1975.

A clean finish to a long chase

Rybakina did not lose her serve all match. She landed 63 per cent of her first serves and closed it out with her sixth ace. "I was ready for longer rallies," she said afterwards. "She plays a lot of drop shots and changing the rhythm, so I was happy I stayed focused, stayed aggressive."

Her early losses to Putintseva are now in the past. Rybakina dropped their first two meetings but now leads the head-to-head 3-2. Their last match before Thursday was a 2024 Madrid quarter-final, which she won 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-5 after saving two match points.

The maths had already been close to settled. Rybakina came to Tokyo with a 1,451-point lead over Aryna Sabalenka. Thursday's win pushed that lead to 1,511 points, according to Tennis365. That is more than the 1,500 points an unbeaten WTA Finals champion can earn, so the Belarusian can no longer catch her.

"I'm really proud of what I've achieved this season and the consistency I've shown throughout the year," Rybakina said, calling it "an incredibly special moment for me."

The season that got her there

Rybakina's 2026 has been the best of her career. She won the Australian Open in January, then took Stuttgart. Her US Open title in September was her third major, and it made her World No. 1 for the first time on September 14, replacing Sabalenka at the top.

The autumn was harder. She lost early at the China Open and admitted before Tokyo that she was "physically, mentally really tired" after New York. She is also managing a foot problem. Even so, she won the Ningbo Open last week, her tour-leading fourth title of the year. She also arrived in Tokyo already qualified for the WTA Finals, where she will be presented with the year-end No. 1 trophy. Only a Roland Garros title is missing from a career Grand Slam.

Osaka stunned by an 18-year-old

The day was much worse for the home favourite. Naomi Osaka, a four-time major champion, lost 6-3, 7-5 to Slovak wild card Mia Pohánková. Pohánková, the 2025 Wimbledon junior champion, is ranked No. 144 and only just turned 18.

Osaka led 2-0 early, but Pohánková took the first set. In the second she saved break points in two of her service games, then broke Osaka in the 12th game to finish the match in 1 hour, 35 minutes. "I believe all the time," the teenager said. "She's a really good player, and I'm just proud of myself."

It is the best win of Pohánková's career and her first WTA 500 quarter-final. A year ago she was ranked No. 659. For Osaka, it is a third straight event without reaching a quarter-final.

Quarter-final line-up taking shape

Rybakina's next match is a rematch of last week's Ningbo final against Leylah Fernandez, who beat No. 14 seed Elise Mertens 6-2, 7-6(8) on Thursday. Rybakina won in Ningbo 6-2, 6-2 and leads their head-to-head 4-2. Pohánková plays American Alycia Parks, who beat Kimberly Birrell 6-3, 6-1, for a place in her first tour-level semi-final.
