Kouamé, 17, saves every break point to stun Sonego and earn Musetti date
French wildcard Moïse Kouamé beat Lorenzo Sonego 7-6(2), 6-4 in Lyon for his first tour-level win since Roland-Garros. Sixth seed Lorenzo Musetti is next.

Moïse Kouamé had gone five months without a tour-level win. On Monday in front of a home crowd at the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in Lyon, the 17-year-old French wildcard ended that run by beating Italy's Lorenzo Sonego 7-6(2), 6-4. He saved all five break points he faced.
Kouamé is ranked No. 194, 105 places below Sonego, a four-time ATP titlist who came in at No. 89. The match lasted 1 hour and 51 minutes on the Central court. It was Kouamé's first main-draw win since his run to the third round of Roland-Garros in the spring, and his fourth tour-level win in total.
Composure under pressure
The first set was decided by how each player handled the pressure points. Kouamé held firm whenever Sonego threatened his serve. Sonego came apart in the tie-break, where he made five unforced errors on the way to losing it 7-2. According to Tennis Majors, he made 14 unforced errors across the opening set.
The teenager broke once in the second set and then served it out. He had to win two service games from deuce to close the match. "I think the key was to stay calm, as calm as possible," Kouamé said afterwards, as quoted by Tennis Now. He was more animated speaking to the crowd: "Ah man, every time I play in France, I feel like it's crazy. I just, I can beat everybody."
In Gasquet's footsteps
The win puts Kouamé in rare company. He is the third-youngest player to win a match in the event's history, which includes its years in Marseille. Only Richard Gasquet, at 16 in 2003, and Roger Federer, at 17 in 1999, were younger. The Gasquet link goes further: the former world No. 7 is Kouamé's technical advisor, and French Tennis Federation coach Laurent Raymond also works with him.
Kouamé first drew wide attention at Roland-Garros. He became the youngest man to win a first-round match in Paris since 1991 and the youngest to win a match at any major since 2009. Since then the results had dried up, which made Monday's win over an experienced tour player all the more important.
Musetti up next
Next comes his biggest test of the week. Sixth seed Lorenzo Musetti beat his compatriot Matteo Arnaldi in straight sets on the same court. That was Musetti's first match win since the US Open, and it means Kouamé faces a second Italian in a row in the round of 16.
Another young player also had a big day on the opening Monday in Lyon. Britain's Felix Balshaw, ranked No. 186, won his first ATP Tour match by beating Portugal's Jaime Faria 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Against Musetti, Kouamé gets another chance to show that his Roland-Garros run was the start of something. The match is one of the most anticipated of the week in Lyon, and it will go a long way towards deciding whether the French teenager finishes his season on a high.

Alexander Zverev will finish 2026 as the world No. 1. The German clinched the year-end top spot on Monday without hitting a ball, when Carlos Alcaraz lost 7-5, 7-6(4) to Zizou Bergs in the third round of the Rolex Shanghai Masters. That result left nobody able to catch him in the race.
